NIH news release: NIAID CREATES HIV VACCINE DISCOVERY BRANCH TO PROMOTE SYNERGY BETWEEN BASIC HIV RESEARCHERS AND VACCINE DESIGNERS

To accelerate the translation of basic discoveries about HIV into advances in vaccine design and evaluation, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has formed a new Vaccine Discovery Branch within the Vaccine Research Program in the Division of AIDS (DAIDS).

The National Latino AIDS Action Agenda Network (NLAAN) released the Latino/Hispanic HIV/AIDS Federal Policy Recommendations Addressing the Latino AIDS Crisis

This week, the National Latino AIDS Action Agenda Network (NLAAN), which includes organizations from cities across the country, released the Latino/Hispanic HIV/AIDS Federal Policy Recommendations Addressing the Latino AIDS Crisis. The National Minority AIDS Council applauds and supports the efforts of the NLAAN in responding to the HIV/AIDS emergency in Latino/Hispanic communities across the nation, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. mtvU, MTV’s Peabody and Emmy Award-winning college network, and the Kaiser Family Foundation, in partnership with POZ Magazine, today unveiled “Pos or Not” (http://www.posornot.com) an online game that challenges stereotypes and breaks down the barriers that may prevent people from talking openly about HIV/AIDS, getting tested, and using protection.

Fortunately, there are ways to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The National Medical Association (NMA), which serves as a collective voice of physicians of African descent, says HIV/AIDS is an epidemic which must be fought on all fronts. The group is calling on African-Americans to come together to do the following.

Call to Action: National Clinician Testing and Awareness Day
November 1 to Dec 1, 2007

The National Medical Association (NMA) and the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center (NMAETC), collaborated for National Clinician Testing and Awareness Day. We are asking all clinicians, health care providers and caregivers have a HIV test done for National Clinician Testing and Awareness Day. This is the first ever call to action targeted specifically to healthcare professionals who provide care and support for individuals with HIV.

Observes World AIDS Day

The National Medical Association (NMA) joins organizations and persons worldwide concerned about the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1st, is the international day of coordinated activism against the continued spread of HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day provides an avenue to strengthen the coordinated global effort to face the challenges of this epidemic. As the oldest and largest medical organization particularly focused on the health of African Americans, the underserved, and other communities of color, the NMA has a vested interest in working toward the elimination of HIV/AIDS and its devastating impact on African Americans.
